Ladies trade hiking boots for snowshoes

The ladies Sunday treks are officially snowshoe trips now that there is adequate snow. With the snow came the assurance that a small fire for their traditional “smokie on a bun” lunch is safe. During the hiking season, the ladies explored the hills around Lac des Roches and have added at least a dozen more routes to their existing inventory of local routes of all levels of difficulty. All ladies with any level of comfort on snowshoes are invited to join the group for a day of fun. Routes, their length and the appropriate starting points are determined once the day’s participants are finalized. Hikes are every Sunday. Hikes are never cancelled although they may not occur if all the participants decide not to go. Call Sharron at 250-593-0041 by Saturday night if you wish to join the next day’s hike.

Ladies enjoy the last auction on Lee Road

Two dozen ladies. including a carload from Lac des Roches, enjoyed an afternoon of swapping new and used merchandise at yet another hilarious “ladies only auction” on Saturday, November 28. Our gracious hosts have recommended that future auctions be conducted at the Interlakes Community Hall where any one or group of  friends could host the event with all the amenities the hall has to offer, specifically lots of room. There would be a nominal cover charge of $2 for the use of the hall and kitchen facilities which makes it very appealing. Anyone interested in hosting an auction is welcome to set a date with the hall booking secretary and advertise the date and time locally.

Abundant wildlife

Everyone in the South Cariboo will agree that overall wildlife sightings seem to be down this year however late summer and fall provided quite a show for area residents.  Otters, mink, ermine and bald eagles have provided quite a show along the lake shore for those close enough to see their activity. Grouse, rabbits, deer and foxes have wandered through the yards all around the lake and seem to be getting somewhat domesticated within the human population. Further into the forest, wolves, moose and even elk have been spotted. Cougars have been prowling neighbouring communities, but no sightings have been reported in the Lac des Roches subdivisions.

Boultbee Road Drainage “Facelift”

After years of planning, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure proceeded with the Boultbee Road drainage ditch modifications in early November. New culverts are intended to redirect spring run-off water under the road, into small above-ground settling ponds, then along and under the upgraded lake access road, and finally down an open ditch into the lake. Road degradation and potential property damage along the previous route should be considerably mitigated by this design. Since snow started during the last days of the project, crews will be back in the spring to complete the outstanding clean-up and landscaping.

Outdoor Recreational Vehicle Registration in effect

The ORV Registration legislation came into effect Nov. 1, 2015. This means that atv’s and snowmobiles that are on sections of local Forest Service Roads to access crown land trails, must be registered and post a registration number, either with a decal or license plate issued by ICBC. The rules for the drivers of ORV’s changed from the original proposed legislation.  Young drivers without driver’s licenses must be in the presence of a fully licensed driver.  Drivers must also have third party liability insurance.  The BC Wildlife Federation has made this very easy as they offer an annual family membership which covers all the family members with needed insurance as long as their purpose in the “bush” is to hunt or fish, meaning they are carrying appropriate fishing or hunting gear, including a valid license for that activity (where appropriate). There is considerable information on the website, www.bcwf.bc.ca.

Unique art display at Lac des Roches

Dessie Marshall, granddaughter of long time Boultbee Road residents, Alex and Marion Marshall, is making the lake cabin her temporary residence while she continues to travel the west coast of North America showcasing her unique art of carved plants leaves. Several ladies on Boultbee Road enjoyed a private viewing of her work in August and all agreed, it really must be seen and touched to be fully appreciated. The owners of Lac des Roches Resort invited Dessie to use their restaurant to display some of her work for their guests and the public on Sunday, Sept. 6. Dessie was there to explain her art form and what inspired her creativity. Her passion is contagious and could change the way one looks at leaves forever. Her art remained on display in the restaurant throughout the fall and can be viewed on her website, violenthippieart.com.

Farewell to Marg Neill

Several dozen ladies crowded into Marg’s house for one last coffee party on Thanksgiving weekend before she left Boultbee Road for good. Tributes to Marg and memories of her and her family’s contribution to the community were shared throughout the morning celebration through stories and “virtual gifts”, respecting Marg’s efforts to downsize and remove unnecessary clutter from her home.  We wish her well in her new home in Kamloops.

Residents provide input to South Cariboo study

Lac des Roches residents were among the 100 or so citizens who attended an information gathering meeting with George Abbott on Oct. 14 at the Interlakes Community Hall. There have been concerns raised by individuals and special interest groups about the governance of the Interlakes area. A request for grant money by the Interlakes Economic Association prompted the Cariboo Regional District to hire Mr. Abbot and his partners to conduct a study and produce a report on issues of governance. The report is expected to be complete by December 31 of this year.

Community walk Oct. 5th – all good.

A good cause, good weather, and good fellowship brought Lac des Roches neighbours out walking on Sunday, Oct. 5 as an informal “run for the cure” team to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. The “walking pool” style route, from the east end of Boultbee Road to the west end of Gerald Crescent allowed walkers to join in and drop off where they chose. We had a $5 participation fee and with that and generous donations from the walkers and other residents, raised $185 so far, and are still receiving donations. Thank you everyone and expect the walk to happen again next year, same time, same place.
