Bird Count

Bridge lake Naturalists held their 12th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Jan 3rd, 2009. It was a beautiful, though cold morning -24C. A few volunteers braved the cold for this traditional bird count. We started at Marshalls’, then followed our pre-defined route around the north shore of Bridge Lake, stopping here and there, counting all the species and numbers of each that we could find. As always, the Black-capped and Mountain Chickadees topped the list for numbers of individuals. One Boreal Chickadee and high numbers of Pine Grosbeaks were counted this year. All five woodpeckers were present in the allowable count period of one week, three days before the 3rd and 3 days after; four on the actual count day. Also of special interest was one Ring-Necked Pheasant (likely an escapee from one of the local pre-staged hunts last summer). One American Dipper presented itself in the stream and a flock of Bohemian Waxwings on the 31st, feeding on the rosehips. In due course the final tallies will be posted on the Audubon website.
