Forestry Activity

Background

Economic pressure and political will has allowed logging to expand into this sensitive watershed although harvesters are mitigating the visual impact from LdR’s McDonald Rest Stop as per the existing Forest Stewardship Plans. As an official stakeholder of the land, our society is included in the consultation process and encouraged to monitor compliance of harvesting plans in both Kamloops and 100 Mile House Forest Districts.

Proposed Cut Blocks 2023

West Fraser has proposed numerous cut blocks just south of Lac des Roche and the Watershed Society has been engaged in the consultation process. While logging practices have improved over the years, we are very concerned about environmental damage to our watershed and requested that West Fraser’s eliminate the 3 cut blocks that are closest to LdR.    Logging Consultation Update – Aug 2023       Range Referral Map

Aspen Logging 2017

Harvesting of aspen on the north side of Highway 24 is complete east of Wavey Lake Road, including the block near Opax Road. The old trails to “five meadows” and beyond have been replaced with new logging roads which will be usable with off road vehicles although unlogged trails have substantial downed trees. Planned logging on the north side of the highway, between the two gravel pits and still flagged has been cancelled. The planned aspen logging northeast of the McCarthy residential area has begun, on a new access road. The access road will service the expansion of West Fraser’s evergreen harvesting on the north and east side of the Telus tower. This new logging road will eventually provide access to crown land for the public from the McCarthy corner public easement through to Wavey Lake Road near 201 Road.
